ASSOCIATE PARTNERS
PIA was founded in 1931 as the National Association of Mutual Insurance Agents (NAMIA), a nonprofit created to support independent agents representing mutual insurance companies in the property and casualty market. At the time, mutual insurance was controversial and often criticized as “un-American,” and agents faced harassment and discrimination from proponents of traditional stock companies.
With the economic boom of the late 1950s, mutual insurers and their agents became strong competitors, demand for personal and commercial coverage surged, and independent agencies expanded nationwide. NAMIA responded by broadening its benefits and education programs, doubling membership to 20,000 in the 1960s.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the association shifted from an inward-focused group to an industry voice influencing policy, regulation, and consumer issues. It took leadership roles on flood, crime and no-fault auto insurance, opposed bank entry into the agency business, and championed consumer-focused dispute resolution initiatives. Rebranded as the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA National), it grew to represent 180,000 agents and staff.
Regionally, the Western Alliance was formed in 2004 to represent nine western states, strengthening advocacy and collaboration among independent agencies. In 2022, it became a board-run association and welcomed Hawaii. Today, the Western Alliance Board of Directors is composed of independent agents with deep industry expertise, united in advancing the interests of the independent agent community.
